Village Board

The President, elected at-large (meaning not representing any specific ward, but instead representing all) for a two-year term of office, together with six Trustees elected at-large for two-year, staggered terms comprise the Village Board.  The Board serves as the legislative branch of Village government, enacting ordinances and resolutions, approving the annual budget, setting policies and taking other actions to guide the operations of the Village government.  Elections are held in April of each year, preceded by a February primary if there are more than two candidates for the same office.  At the annual organizational meeting in April the President appoints members to the four committees subject to approval by the majority of the Village Board.

Appearing Before the Village Board

Any citizen may appear before the Village Board on any issue.  Because of the need to comply with the Open Meetings Laws, any matter for which Board action is desired must appear on the posted agenda.  The agenda is finalized and distributed on the Thursday preceding each meeting.   Anyone desiring to have an issue placed on the agenda should make his or her request to the Village Clerk-Treasurer no later than 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, preceding the meeting.  Letters, petitions, reports or other documents are always preferred over verbal requests so that copies can be distributed to the Board members along with the meeting agenda for their advance information and study.

Although any citizen may address the Board on the first meeting of the month during the "Period of Public Comment", the open meeting laws require a specific issue to be listed on the posted agenda.  Therefore, the citizens comments may be heard but will not be acted upon unless the subject is noted on the agenda.

Frequently, citizen requests for service or information can easily be resolved without the need to appear before the Board.  The office staff at the Village Hall or the Building Inspector can be contacted for information or resolution of issues.  Any administrative matter not satisfactorily resolved by staff may, of course, always be brought before the President and Trustees.
